5 Best Food Plants to Grow at Home

Growing vegetables at home have become more appealing in the last couple of years. Not only does it ensure that you're getting safe and organic items, but it's also a great way to pick up a hobby and cultivate your green thumb.

Salad Greens

The best food plants to grow at home are salad greens. These include lettuce, spinach, and arugula, among others. Just remember that they need at least 12 hours of sunlight per day to grow properly.


Soybeans and wheatgrass are popular microgreens that you can quickly grow at home. They are high in nutrients like zinc, magnesium, and iron. They can also be made into substitutes for certain meal ingredients. Like salad greens, microgreens don't need a large plot of land either - a seedling tray is best for these plants. Microgreens will germinate within 2 to 3 days under 12 to 14 hours of light. When your greens are 1 to 2 inches in height, you can harvest them and prepare for a new cycle.


Pepper plants such as bell peppers, wild chili, banana peppers, and habaneros are relatively easy to grow at home. They thrive best under warm weather and full sun. They require high levels of light for 14 to 20 hours a day. You'll also need a pot or container that's 8 inches tall to grow peppers properly.

Green Onions

Green onions or scallions are one of the easiest edible plants to grow. Take a store-bought bunch of green onions and tie the bulbs together. Place them inside a glass filled with 1 inch of water and change it daily. After a week or two, you can transfer them to a shallow pot and keep them exposed to direct sunlight. Cut off the tops of the plant to harvest them.


Tomatoes are often considered staples to home gardening. They might be a handful for beginners, but it's worth planting because you can use them in various ways. You'll need to place them under sunlight and move them into potting soil when they grow to be 3 inches tall. You can harvest them when they're firm and bright red. Once you've gathered your first batch, you can plant new ones every two weeks.
